Romeo and Juliet:
“Women may fall when there’s no strength in men.”
To me, this means in a relationship the man needs to be there more as being mentally stronger. When the man gives up easily and doesn't put effort and makes the woman fight for the relationship, the relationship will fail and not work out.
The Seagull:
“Wine and tobacco destroy the individuality. After a cigar or a glass of vodka you are no longer Peter Sorin, but Peter Sorin plus somebody else. Your ego breaks in two: you begin to think of yourself in the third person.”
I like this quote because it reminds me of somebody in my life. They use alcohol and smoking as a way to cope with their emotions and it’s affecting them negatively. When those two things are in your body constantly, they are changing how you act and that is not how you used to act. It’s a hard addiction but if you want to be healthier mentally and physically, you need to be willing to change.
Antigone:
“I have been a stranger here in my own land: All my life”
This one I can relate to because for the longest time, I feel like I didn’t belong here. I struggled to learn a new way of life from China to the U.S. Things were challenging like learning a totally new language and getting adjusted to the new environment but now I am comfortable with everything and starting to love life more.
Tale of Genji:
“In the summer of that year the lady became very downcast. She repeatedly asked for her leave to go to her home, but it was not granted.”
Being forced to be in someone’s life is another level of pain. Reminds me of arranged marriages where some cultures force their children to marry strangers that the parents think is good for them. In those marriages mostly it does not bring happiness to either side but misery.
A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings:
“The world had been sad since Tuesday. Sea and sky were a single ash-gray thing and the sands of the beach, which on March nights glimmered like powdered light, had become a stew of mud and rotten shellfish.”
This quote to me describes how someone is going through a lot so they are sad every day seeing no color or light of the world because they lost hope. Feels like depression where everything just does not excite the person anymore and everyday is the same with no motivation to do anything.
