“The Seagull” by Anton Chekhov
After reading and watching “The Seagull”, I found it very interesting because everyone was falling in love with someone that did not love them back or couldn't be together. The story begins with Nina and Konstantin being together and Nina performing his art to his mother, Irina. Irina was not impressed but laughed and said she knew it was gonna be a joke and it was. She kept interrupting his art and making side comments that angered Konstantin and made him stop the performance. Irina supports Nina’s acting career and feels bad for her because Nina’s mother died and left everything for her father and the father plans to give everything to the new wife when he dies instead to his daughter. Irina does not support his writings and doesn't understand why he would spend time on them. Irina and Boris were very much in love until he was amazed by Nina’s youthful beauty and optimism. Masha tries her best to help Konstantin because she loves him but he doesn't love her but the school teacher loves her. Masha ends up marrying the school teacher which makes her life not any happier. Irina seems like she’s jealous of Nina because when they asked Irina to sing she didn’t want to but when Sorin said perhaps Nina can sing and suddenly Irina was able to sing. Konstantin was so upset and depressed that he shot himself in the head and almost ended his life but luckily he lived through that. Towards the end, for the first time, it felt like Irina and Konstantin were getting along when he asked her to change his bandage. Until he brought up how Boris was hanging out with Nina and that got Irina upset because she wants him no matter what. Irina promised Konstantin to take Boris with her so Nina could fall in love with him again and hope everything could go back to normal. Then Boris confesses to Irina that he loves Nina and wants to break up with Irina but Irina convinces Boris to go with him while Boris is still deeply in love with Nina. Two years later, Konstantin still loves Nina but she loves Boris. In the end, Konstantin ended his life because Nina did not want to stay with him. Overall, I felt bad for Konstantin because his mother and the others did not support him in his writings and his love life was also not good so it made him so unhappy that he gave up his life. This story is overwhelmed with emotions, the love for people who don’t love them back and having to just live with it while being unhappy or end its life is a tragedy.

hi Joy i agree with you the powerful feelings and difficulties the characters experience especially Konstantin is a sad journey are well conveyed in your account. The tale is heavily resonant with the issue of unmet wishes and the effects of social pressure.
