“Four Poems from Greece” by Phoebo Giannisi -

The Poetry of Phoebe Giannisi, the “Four Poems from Greece”, caught my attention. I don’t think I have ever read poems like this before, the style is different from the ones I have seen and read. First, she did not capitalize the first three poems until the last poem. She used dash marks in each line to show she takes a moment before moving to the next of what she wants to say. A few of my favorite poems I want to talk about are the first poem, “Nostos I”, where she talks about losing someone you love and the memories that are left behind to reflect and think about that person. Memories bring emotions and sometimes are hard to handle or think about that is in the past or that one had experienced. The Third poem, “Episode IV”, is a poem where she tries to remember what the memories were. Sometimes we don’t remember the exact moments that had happened in the past and have to rethink over and over until we think of a close enough memory of what had happened that we can bring back and talk about. It is not easy to remember a lot of things for some people as they grow older. For example, I am starting to forget certain things I have done or gone through. I still remember a lot from my past and I believe those memories are still there because they are very important to me. Those memories reflect on me not just to say oh I went through such hard times but to look back and be proud, use it to become better. I thought her poems were relatable but different and interesting to read to figure out what she meant and what she wanted to tell the world.

  1. I felt the same way regarding "Episode IV". I loved the way it flowed. It showed how one tries to recall memories, and comes up with a some-what different version of what it actually was. Goes to show that us humans cannot remember everything that happens, every day.

  2. I also really liked "Episode IV". I thought it was a really interesting perspective of grief to include that made her poems come full circle. With the first poem the memories are too painful, but then before you know it you can no longer remember the things that used to plague your mind daily.

  3. I enjoyed reading your blog post. All four poems had a unique message behind them. I also enjoyed reading the third poem, "Episode IV". The third poem shows that just as fast as those memories we hold so close go, we are quick to forget and are left with blurry memories.
